What is a Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC)?

Prior to purchasing or acquiring a firearm in California, you must have a valid Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC). You must present your FSC to the firearms dealer at the time you begin a transaction to purchase or acquire a firearm. An FSC applicant must be at least 18 years of age and must present clear evidence of identity and age by presenting a California Driver License or California Department of Motor Vehicles Identification Card. The fee for taking the FSC Test and obtaining an FSC is twenty-five dollars ($25). The $25 fee entitles you to take the test twice (from the same DOJ Certified Instructor) if necessary.

Is it difficult to get a Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC)?

No. To obtain an FSC you must score at least 75% (23 correct answers out of 30 questions) on a true/false and multiple-choice test administered by Instructors certified by the Department of Justice and are commonly offered at most gun stores and ranges. The easiest way to prepare for the test is to read the FSC Study Guide which contains all the information necessary to pass the test. The best approach to preparing for the test is to schedule an hour of instruction with a certified firearms instructor who can prepare you for the test and the basics of proper gun handling and safety before you go home with your new purchase.

Am I required to take a training class after purchase of a firearm?

No. But training class is essential to learning proper gun handling, safety, storage, and marksmanship techniques. Even experienced shooters are encouraged to take handgun classes periodically to refresh their skills. We highly recommend a basic handgun safety course for new gun owners.

Do you offer firearms safety training that would be appropriate for families and children?

Yes. In fact, we offer course content specifically designed to instruct on firearms safety for kids of all ages. It offers a positive, welcoming, and fun learning experience for youth, all while promoting the safe, responsible, and ethical use of firearms.
