On the other hand, self-defense is a reactive measure involving actions taken to protect oneself when faced with an imminent threat. In an increasingly unpredictable world, investing in your safety and the safety of your loved ones is no longer a luxury but a necessity.
Situational awareness is the conscious perception and understanding of one’s environment and is foundational to personal safety and self-defense. It involves being alert and attuned to the surroundings, accurately interpreting sensory information, and comprehending the potential risks or opportunities in the immediate vicinity. Prior to purchasing or acquiring a firearm in California, you must have a valid Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC). You must present your FSC to the firearms dealer at the time you begin a transaction to purchase or acquire a firearm. An FSC applicant must be at least 18 years of age and must present clear evidence of identity and age by presenting a California Driver License or California Department of Motor Vehicles Identification Card. The fee for taking the FSC Test and obtaining an FSC is twenty-five dollars ($25). The $25 fee entitles you to take the test twice (from the same DOJ Certified Instructor) if necessary.

The easiest way to prepare for the test is to read the FSC Study Guide which contains all the information necessary to pass the test. The best approach to preparing for the test is to schedule an hour of instruction with a certified firearms instructor who can prepare you for the test and the basics of proper gun handling and safety before you go home with your new purchase.
